Maltese Diving Instructor Logs 25,000th Dive.
On Saturday 3rd April 2010, Dive Systems’ Chief Instructor Joseph Chircop aka Derek logged his 25,000 dive during a PADI Rescue Diver training session. In his diving career of over 38 years Derek has managed to log a large number of dives working both locally and abroad. Derek started diving at the age of 14 and started working as an instructor in 1978 he has worked with several local diving schools and ran his own dive schools ‘Derek’s Scuba School’ and ‘North East Diving Services’ for a number of Years. In recent years he has been working in the Maldives, Egypt and Kuwait as an instructor. Derek is a PADI Staff instructor, CMAS Three Star Instructor and SSI Dive Con Specialist.
Asked if he is still keen on diving, Derek replied that notwithstanding all the diving he has done over the years he still has a passion for diving “My next holiday will be a diving trip. Many ask me how on earth could I go diving when I’m on holiday since this is my job, but I still have a great passion for diving and so it is only natural for me”. Derek said that he is proud to be associated with Dive Systems which he has known throughout his career and is looking forward to continue to develop Dive Systems’ instruction to its highest standards.
“It is a great pleasure to work with a person with the experience and know-how that Derek has and the 25,000 dives he has logged with us is an important milestone” said Dive Systems Director Paul Sciberras who has been involved in the local diving business for over 40 years himself. Mr. Sciberras said that Dive Systems had built its reputation on service, reliability and safety and therefore it was important to have a team of experienced instructors with the necessary know-how to give its clients not only a great dive but also high quality education and safety at all times.
Paul Sciberras said that Dive Systems has slowly grown over the years from humble beginnings at a time when diving and diving as a tourism niche were in their infancy to a large dive centre offering a whole range of diving services. Dive Systems is currently investing heavily in its facilities and equipment particularly through EU part-financing under the Tourism Ministry to continue to improve the product on offer. “In these difficult times it has been hard to continue to invest however we are confident that this investment will place Dive Systems as the top Dive School in Malta and one of the best in the Region” concluded Mr. Sciberras.
